Greengate Blanket
I’ve made several versions of this blanket over the years. I first fell in love with the design when I found a picture on Pinterest many years ago. The original version was made by Greengate, who are a Danish Homeware designer. If you are not familiar with the brand, their website is well worth a look.
Here is the original version from a very old Greengate catalogue.
Here are some of my other Greengate blankets. I think I have made 4 or 5 now!
This time I’ve added more green and used a brighter yellow. These colours really say Summer to me.
If you would like to make your own version of the Greengate blanket, I’ve written a tutorial to help you. I’ve listed the colours and stitch I’ve used for each row, but mix it up and make it totally your own. Follow the tutorial and you will be flying.
It’s a very simple pattern, but if you are not familiar with changing stitches between rows it can be a little tricky to keep your stitch count correct. The tutorial will show you where to place your stitches so you always have the correct number of stitches in a row, without needing to count.
Ok, lets get going…
Starting with treble rows
1. Chain any number of stitches that is divisible by 3. I have chained 21 for this tutorial. Make a treble (US double crochet) in the FOURTH chain from the hook. This counts as the first treble. Now treble in each chain along the row. In my sample I have 19 trebles, including the turning chains. No matter how many chains you start with, you will always have a number of trebles that is divisible by 3 + 1 extra treble.
2. Chain 2 and turn (counts as the first treble). Put your next treble where the needle is pointing and treble in each stitch along the row.
3. When you get to the end of the row, you will feel like you have run out of stitches. To keep your stitch count correct and your edges straight, the very last stitch needs to go in the top of the turning chain 3, indicated by the needle. In my sample this is the 19th stitch. You may want to count this first row to get a feel where the stitch needs to go.
4. Work as many rows as you need to. As long as you always start and end the rows in the same way, you will find that you don’t need to count stitches.
In the pattern, this will be called a TREBLE ROW A.
Adding Granny stripe rows
5. Join a new colour and chain 2 (counts as first treble). If you are not changing colour, just chain 2 and turn.
6. Make your first treble in the same stitch, indicated by the needle.
7. Skip 2 stitches and make 3 trebles in the next stitch.
8. Skip 2 stitches, treble 3 in the next stitch along the row until 3 stitches remain. Skip 2 stitches and make 2 trebles in the last stitch to finish the row. The last stitch is the top of the turning chain, indicated by the needle.
In the pattern, this will be called GRANNY ROW A.
9. To add another Granny stripe row, change colour, if required or change 2 and turn. Make 3 trebles in each space along the row.
10. At the end of the row, make 1 treble in the top of the last treble in the row below.
In the pattern, this will be called Granny row B.
You can add as many Granny rows as you like. Just remember to always alternate between Granny row A and Granny row B.
This will ensure that your edges stay straight and your stitch count remains correct.
Changing back to treble rows
This is usually the point where mixed stitch misery sets in and the stitch count goes wrong. What comes next will depend on whether the previous row was a Granny row A or Granny Row B. They are easy to identify. Granny row A’s have two trebles at the start and end of the row. Granny row B’s only have 1.
So, to change back to a treble row after a Granny row A
11. Join a new colour, if required or chain 2 and turn (counts as the first treble). Put your next treble where the needle is pointing. Treble in each stitch along the row until 2 stitches are remaining.
12. Skip 1 stitch and make the last treble in the top of the last treble in the row below.
In the pattern, this will be called Treble row B.
To change back to a treble row after a Granny row B (1 treble at the start and end of the row), just work a treble row A.
As long as you alternate between the rows when required, you won’t need to keep counting stitches and you should have lovely poker straight edges. You will get used to which row comes next very quickly and won’t need to keep referring to the pattern.
Now, on to the pattern. You will need:

Dk yarn. I used Scheepjes Colour Crafter 100g balls), but any brand is fine.
2 x Middelberg (dark blue)
1 x Texel (light blue)
1 x Tilburg (dark pink)
1 x Den Bosch (mid pink)
1 x Sittard (light pink)
1 x Barnveld (cream)
1 x Assen (dark green)
1 x Delfzijl(light green)
1 x Leerdam (yellow)
I only used around 30g of the greens and 15g of the yellow.
4mm hook
yarn needle

Stitch Terms
ch - chain
tr - treble crochet (US double crochet)
htr- half treble crochet (US half double crochet)
sk - skip
Finished blanket size 100 x 130 centimeters
Instructions
Using a 4mm hook and dark blue, chain 153.
Row 1: 1tr in 4th chain from hook. 1tr in each chain. (151 tr)
Rows 2-3: In dark blue, treble row A
Row 4: In dark blue, granny row A.
Row 5: Join yellow and 3ch. * 1htr in space between trebles and 2ch.* Repeat from * to * across the row. 1htr in top of last treble in row below.
Row 6: In dark blue, granny row A.
Row 7: In dark blue, treble row B.
Rows 8-9: In dark blue, treble row A.
Rows 10-11: In dark pink, treble row A.
Rows 12-13: In mid pink, treble row A.
Row 14-15: In dark pink, treble row A.
Row 16: In mid pink, granny Row A
Row 17: In dark pink, granny row B
Row 18: In mid pink, granny Row A
Row 19: In dark pink, granny row B
